90% of what I do could run on a 24 year old laptop. I'll have to run everything through the terminal, but it will work.

The biggest issue involves the web-browser because terminal browsers aren't viable and uMatrix isn't always able to get everything unnecessary out, otherwise, I could easily post on a 24yo laptop without any issues, and probably play Doom as well. If I need a more powerful laptop, I will go with a ThinkPad T42 or X61. If I actually need to do resource heavy things, I'll do it on a desktop computer because that will get me way further than a laptop.

I mostly email people, use IRC and XMPP, use Mumble, browse websites, program (or rather, fail to do so), and download/upload files. The hardest part would probably involve websites because most websites are built with tons of soydev code, even though it could easily be stripped out to load faster. If websites were properly optimized, a 24 year old laptop would be enough for quite a lot still. It would be slow regardless unless optimized extremely carefully, but it wouldn't just die on you.

Why don't you just go with a T61/X61? I'm pretty sure a few niche Linux distros still support 32-bit x86 but probably not for much longer. A lot of stuff just isn't going to be usable, I know you likely don't care but even 4cuck probably wouldn't load on one of those

True, true. I don't mind using old versions of operating systems, although it would have to be worth it for more than the lulz to do something like this. I may still get both T20 and T61/X61 if I can find both, then just configure the laptops as good as possible, and if I can get by on T20 then I do (otherwise go with T61/X61), although the biggest issue I see is with the browser because I can't just find some really weird workaround, nor can I just figure out how to make my own browser-engine + GUI or terminal browser specifically designed to work on such old hardware, certainly not without things being very broken.

Also I just googled the max RAM for the T20, it's 256MB of SDRAM (pre-DDR!). I don't mean to be rude but there is simply no way you'd be able to get any type of remotely usable graphical environment on that thing, I think even LXDE would be just too much. Only things I can think of are extremely simple window managers. It could very well be usable as a hobbyist machine for programming, but the Internet? Absolutely not in this day and age. Even the shittiest netbooks back in the late 2000s had 1GB, and those were dog-slow no matter what.
Bottom line: it's fine as a hobbyist machine, not even close to decent for a primary one.

Get both if you can, if not just get a T61/X61. You mentioned upgrading the machines - while it's certainly not impossible, even the T61's DDR2 RAM is getting hard to find now. It's available, but not the cheapest stuff in the world. Have no idea about the T20's SDRAM, could be out there thanks to retro hoarders but it's likely price gouged as well.
Most of my knowledge on ThinkPads has slowly withered away but one thing you also have to be aware of is the screens in the older ThinkPads, they use CCFL backlights instead of LED ones. The backlights can fail or go bad and I'm not confident in the T20 having a lot of guides and replacement parts available in that scenario. There's tons of documentation on the T61 though.

I have a T61 (4:3) and it was unusable when doing web browsing, and it ran hot often unless you remained on Windows XP. You can get Dell computers that have it disabled, it would carry a yellow sticker with "3 ME DISABLED". [update: the n100 started messing with me and failed. also i am back on windows 7/obsd with some i3.]

From what I'm seeing on a ThinkPad Wiki, it's 512MB of SDRAM but that is probably still rather slow. It would probably be enough if I did not use web-browsers at all, or used something *extremely* basic (terminal browser or really, really old GUI browser), because everything else could work through the terminal perfectly fine. I would gladly do some extremely weird setup if it would allow me to use 512MB or less SDRAM as a daily driver, but I am thinking about it a bit more now, and it is unrealistic. T61 or X61 is still realistic though especially given they could have 8GB DDR2 RAM.

Will have to note that for repairing if my ThinkPad laptops end up having broken backlights, especially if I want to use it without connecting a monitor (although with the amount of old family TVs and even occasional monitor laying around, that isn't a particularly big deal if I only used the laptop at home).
