Depends on what you mean by friend. People are generally friendly enough to engage in casual conversation and willing to do one or two small favors for you if you ask nicely. All it takes is to not be shy and have common sense. The general advice of talking to your workplace colleagues, joining certain groups, and going to social hangout spots apply here. But if you want to focus on quality over quantity, which might be what you're really asking for, that's a whole different ballpark. After all, you could have a hundred friends but it might not make you feel any less lonely if those friendships feel situational, transactional, or fragile. I have no solution for that one, and if I did I wouldn't be on the Schlog.
