Windows 8.x wasn't really *that* bad like some people claim to be (though they probably forgot it even existed by now). Comfy UI-wise, it introduced some new innovative features that were easier to use on "tablet" desktop environments, which also improved the operating system's functionalities compared to previous Windows versions prior it, it was also the starting point of most modern Windows accessories you see today on Win10/11, such as ribbon toolbars in file explorer, mounting ISO files natively, modern task manager, etc. It ran smoothly on even obsolete, ancient hardware as well compared to Windows 10 (which said obsolete hardware can barely run). The operating system may have had its ups and downs due to numerous complaints from desktop users feeling themselves alienated in favor of Microsoft leaning on a more touchscreen-friendly approach, which is somewhat understandable, but you can't deny that it is what shaped the Windows operating systems today with Surface devices being sold and produced by the company and such
>bu-bu-but muh start screen!
Non-issue, just install OpenShell (formerly ClassicShell) for the classic start menu instead of whining about the smallest of things, even literal toddlers can do it

Typing this from Windows 8.1 btw

Obligatory Windows thread

i like macos ui more than windows or linux, i have tried them all
ehh, for me window management is goofy, options are sometimes arranged in basically unexplained ways and the menubar-dock layout can become cumbersome

For window management I just installed Magnet which lets me snap windows into a grid with keyboard shortcuts, also I just never touch the full screen option ever
I do have some other gripes with Mac OS X though, driver support really leaves a lot to be desired, I can't use my monitor's built-in speakers properly with my Mac and my keyboard and mouse's lighting patterns are stuck to the default ones. Also controller support is abysmal, half the time my games won't recognize my Xbox controller, I swear even my iPhone has better support for controllers

Also as for the main topic, I tried Windows 8 for a couple weeks because it was on a laptop my dad gave to relative as a gift, I did not like the Metro Apps whatsoever but it was tolerable once I installed OpenShell
In 2020 during the pandemic I tried to install Windows 7 on my laptop that had Windows 10, I never got it to work as I couldn't get Windows 7 to play nice with UEFI, I did manage to get Windows 8 to work though which was pretty cool

Rectangle for me but it feels kinda goofy, doesn't integrate as well as Windows and Aero Snap. Scaling is actually bad, I don't know why when Quartz is actually a modern enough Unix graphical stack but it is.

nigga the screen broke with lines on it and backlight issues because I kept it on a table running Final Cut... On the pros. An intended workload, that they advertise with the device... It's a first party program btw
it probably just didnt like you, glad you learned your lesson
