Windows 8.x wasn't really *that* bad like some people claim to be (though they probably forgot it even existed by now). Comfy UI-wise, it introduced some new innovative features that were easier to use on "tablet" desktop environments, which also improved the operating system's functionalities compared to previous Windows versions prior it, it was also the starting point of most modern Windows accessories you see today on Win10/11, such as ribbon toolbars in file explorer, mounting ISO files natively, modern task manager, etc. It ran smoothly on even obsolete, ancient hardware as well compared to Windows 10 (which said obsolete hardware can barely run). The operating system may have had its ups and downs due to numerous complaints from desktop users feeling themselves alienated in favor of Microsoft leaning on a more touchscreen-friendly approach, which is somewhat understandable, but you can't deny that it is what shaped the Windows operating systems today with Surface devices being sold and produced by the company and such
>bu-bu-but muh start screen!
Non-issue, just install OpenShell (formerly ClassicShell) for the classic start menu instead of whining about the smallest of things, even literal toddlers can do it

Typing this from Windows 8.1 btw

Obligatory Windows thread

>ribbon
fail UI
They killed the 3D skeumorphism and made it soulless too, it's basically windows 7 with a lamer UXTheme and an unneeded WinRT API because I guess Win32 and .net wasn't enough

>task manager
good except it's more unstable than the old one, it'll die without compositing on for example. And I don't think windows should force compositing, bring back classic theme and text mode cmd.exe dammit

Idk. My grandma had it on her laptop when I was 6 and it looked pretty fine to me.

used to have a laptop with 8.1 when it had just come out. I thought it was alright and that people were overreacting, but the moment I got a new PC with 10 on it I could not return. I felt like a boomer trying to use the start screen after being accustomed to a UI actually designed for computers

I used the embedded version in a virtual machine on my Debian computer and it was alright. Definitely takes getting used to though. I ultimately ended up switching to Windows 10 LTSC (also in a VM) because some of my programs wouldn't play well with 8.1.

I mean yeah it does if you slam it into walls or smear it with shit like you must be doing
nigga the screen broke with lines on it and backlight issues because I kept it on a table running Final Cut... On the pros. An intended workload, that they advertise with the device... It's a first party program btw
