at game start there's germany, italy, japan, russia, france, britain, and america, but you can become major if your factory count is good

I have years ago. I mostly played eu4 instead since I preferred it over hoi4. A lot has changed and I don't remember how to even deal with the air force or navy

Air force is kind of easy, navy is a lot more complicated and I still don't pay much attention to naval combat when I play (why I chose the Bulgarians, as the only thing I'd have to pay attention to navally is the Black Sea if I get into a conflict with the Turks or Romanians, or if I join a war against the Soviets). Mess around with the air force a bit when you're getting into wars as the Germans. You start with a lot of planes that can come in handy with the initial invasions of Poland and France. For starters, just group 'em up and send 'em out to the air province where your soldiers are attacking. Just for two beginning tips, bombers destroy and damage fortifications and buildings in the region, and close air support acts as assistance in ground warfare.

Well, as Finland, just be sure to prepare for the Russian invasion that'll come a few years after 1936, the game's start date. Maybe you'll make good friends with the Germans as you do so. I have a pretty good idea for what I'll do in my Bulgaria run, but I don't want to reveal my plan until I go through with it during the game. It'll be a lot of fun.
