Drowning feels absolutely fucking terrible. I almost drowned as a kid and there are times where I remember it and shiver. I remember it vividly
I really haven't thought about how bad drowning is... I kind of equated it to freezing, where after a certain point you sort of relax.
Swallowing the wrong way sucks, so I really can't imagine how it feels to have your lungs fill with water after x seconds of you panicking and struggling to stay above water and breathe.
Then, once you fail, your just sitting there unable to breathe properly, losing strength in your muscles that are keeping you above water.
Then you sink, you can't breathe... I wonder how long you are conscious during that. You'd probably close your eyes when you went under, so it'd be black. Or maybe you're too panicked and you keep them open, and you just watch the sea floor as you begin to feel less and less.

Imagine being in a pure state of panic for 5 minutes and feeling as though you’re being dragged to the depths of nowhere. You’re choking and screaming and kicking but nothing really helps. You eventually run out of energy and stop kicking. That’s where it stopped for me after a dude found out I was drowning and brought me to the shallow area

You’d only really be conscious for about 30 seconds.

Sounds fucking horrible. My older brother started drowning for all of 5 seconds before I jumped in to save him (and it was a beach so he was still panicking for a full minute before we got to land) and even after that he "wasn't right" when we got to land. I was young-ish, so I really couldn't understand the fear he had.
I can't imagine being in his position, and I definitely can't imagine being much younger and having that go on for far longer. I'm glad you're okay. Do you swim and shit? or does it still keep you out of the water?

When your young your body has a survival response that slows down your heart rate to give adults more time to fish you out.

drowning or asphyxiation of any kind, People tried to drown me twice as a kid and i remember the 2nd time i was certain i was gonna die, scary shit

I dont know about terryfing, but the idea of losing consciousness passing out and just simply dying is a deeply unsetteling idea to me. One which i have not internalized how close i was to.
Twice as of now ive passed out alone outside during winter the first time i regained consciousness shortly after, what i remember from the first time was being fully convinced i was in bed at home before realizing i was laying on the ground in the snow.
The second time was when i stepped outside for a cig and my neighbor was returning from walking the dog and found me unresponsive outside my apartment door and called for an ambulance. That was the only time ive been hospitalized.
I still cant really grasp the fact that me freezing to death was a very real possibility, i guess thats what feels kinda terrifying to me how nonchalant and non-threatening the whole situation felt it still doesnt feel real.
