It all comes down to honesty and truthfulness. You feel pity for Jerry because he is kind of like an 8 year old that stumbled upon the site. Meanwhile you just know that Basil is faking it because he wants attention and updoots. Makes him extremely hateable.

To tell you the truth I only started hating Basil because of him constantly spamming his 'cord memes, even when the memes added nothing, were irrelevant, and only existed to derail the threads he posted them in, but specifically because I hate the memes themselves and I go apeshit every time he posts them. It's like a pet peeve/tick.

Also Jerry is actually really nice to other people on the site most of the time, he's pretty chill in spite of his shortcomings, so that only helps to benefit him and his character.
