my only serious guess is that it's to protect hypothetical mining operations on the moon or even mars. but that's a long way off.

My thought is that it could be used to guard U.S properties that are in space (satellites, for example) from being targeted by another powerful force in some surprise blow to knock out communications and mapping technologies during a big war (avoiding a Pearl Harbor in space, basically).

Why do we even bother going to space when most of our ocean is still, to this day, undiscovered?

Speaking tactically, there's a strategic advantage of having a vantage point over the entire planet. There isn't a vantage point over the entire planet when you're at some of the deepest points within the planet, so it simply isn't as useful for those sorts of purposes.

To me the oceans serve as nothing more than giant moats, they're important but don't matter all that much. Submarines can get through and launch ICBMs, though I'm really just thinking about actual invasions. The amount of resources and manpower required just for China to make it across the Taiwan strait and then survive the beaches is too high for them and probably will stay that way for a while.
I'm getting off track but I think the US is in a really good strategic position because of that whole two ocean thing.
