I will simply say that I genuinely believe the Ottoman Empire was closer to being the third rome than the "Holy" "Roman" Empire (germanic larp) could ever be.
Ottomans and Byzantines actively intermarried and built alliances between each other, and there was no huge cultural gap between them that is usually portrayed. Under Ottoman rule, Greeks had a strong commercial and religious influence across Eastern Europe, based among other things on the power of the Ottoman army and its vassals, such as Crimean Tatars.
