why do people draw their characters facing left 99% of the time?

Front-facing characters can look strange depending on the art style, and so people usually draw their character refs at some sort of angle, provided they have the ability to do so. Perhaps the population being primarily right-handed is why they typically face towards the left, as zoomzoomcacapooshitties don't know how to flip their canvas, and it's easier for them to draw that way (I assume.).

I have a tendency to draw all of my characters/subject facing towards the right, but it's ~7:3, rather than 100% of the time.

i wouldn’t know it differs for me and i don’t draw ocs or humans
 
It looks uncanny because it's unbalanced, flip your canvas while sketching as it makes errors apparent.
Interior designers do this too. You're looking at it the "right way" the whole time you're working, looking at a mirrored image is like walking into the room for the first time.
