I think that both German and French are pretty easy for English speakers. I mean English is a Germanic language with lots of Middle French loanwords.
But for me German is a bit hard to learn because they have their own strictly Germanic words and a strict word order.
French (as well as Spanish or Italian) has more words similar to english, but their short words are often incomprehensible with shortened words like c', s', l' flying everywhere. I have no problem with reading French doe because albiet convoluted, the pronounciation of words is unambiguous.
