Just play Emerald or Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire if you want cross-gen evos and the ability to PK Hex in your favorite nugen sloppers from post Gen 3 and pre Gen 7 like I would if I didn't like basically everything in Hoenn already.

Emerald isn't a great game to play first, I would say play Red/Blue instead. They're great games in their own and there's a lot of great choice of pokemon to use in your campaign while not holding your hand at all. You're allowed to roam.

Sperging aside, if you're gonna start with a GB game, just go with GSC. You get more 'mons to choose from and you still get to visit (some parts of) KANTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

I'm not a Kantofag but they're the best games to play first even if they don't have QOL features, personally I prefer Johto but its rougher around the edges and its mechanics basically require bulbapedia.

If you want a fun game, get into the MOTHER series, or pick some other RPG that's objectively better than Pokémon.
