Rei betrays her master because her designated purpose was to start instrumentality and Gendo had his own ambitions. She does give Shinji the choice of instrumentality or non-instrumentality albeit. But she was always willing to sacrifice her life.

I view it as we just got more evangelion so I watched them all and enjoyed them for what they were. It's not like the original series is going away.

Rei could of stuck with Seele's plan but she chose to go with whatever Shinji wanted after forming the first bond with someone in the series besides Gendo. All she did every day before that was float in some LCL and stare at walls until it was time to fight again. To go from living in a cell alone to understanding and making choices based on emotions rather than logic is really strong character growth. It's muted and I can see a case for people liking the other 2 chick's or Shinji more, but my favorite is Rei. And yes Gendo is good too.

Nigga I just think the Rebuilds were a good end to the whole saga, with Shinji choosing to end the whole time-loop thing and finally not being a selfish little fuck

Rebuilds trample on the messages of the original by introducing a "magical girl" who solves all of the MC's problems. The whole point of the original is that Shinji had to stop running from his problems and face them himself.
