Well I can't possibly enumerate all the factors that come into play here, but when it comes to creating their own shlog instead of joining this one, for one svvt used to be here, sadly he died. So this almost happened. But yeah in social pdychology this imo is just explained by the law of group polarization.
Groups that exist because of differences between them will exagerate this differences and further the divide until it becomes unresolvable.
