starting off with my personal favorite: the Graduated Electronic Decelerator (GED)
1000001356.jpg

this is essentially a device that sends powerful electric shocks (up to 90 mA for two seconds with the GED 4 model) through the wearer's body when a button is pressed on a wireless remote control. it's intended to be used as, well, a torture device to keep autists in check. as more traditional methods of corporal punishment started running into problems with the law, Matthew Israel (yes, that's his actual fucking name) decided that a modern solution was needed. most of the staff at the Center have been quite liberal with using it, with even the most mundane offenses (say, closing one's eyes for more than five seconds) resulting in shocks.
it was used extensively at the Judge Rotenberg Center from the early 90s until 2020 when the devices were finally banned by the FDA. however, this ban ended up being overturned in 2021.
as you would expect, it's fairly controversial with a plethora of legal battles surrounding the device and even drawing condemnation from the UN.

i used to be obsessed with this thing for some reason a few years ago, it's pretty depressing. as my knowledge has become rusty i just summarized the wikipedia article for now
