The only reasons people use discord are because it's convenient and popular (bandwagon). Theoretically, you could use Zoom, Skype, or (((Kiketrix))) to do most of the shit Discord does. Maybe also because they seem "le heckin cool chill gamer" even though they're run by glowkikes...

I only use the service when a tech related or other online space has ONLY a 'cord as their method of communication. I hate when they do this and I don't use it for anything else

-extremely secure end to end encryption
-server hosted in Madagascar or something
-has all of discord's useful features like VC and being able to extensively customize channels

Well, then I guess I'm neither an oldfag or a newfag, because I really don't use any chat protocols at all. Private messages and emails work just fine for me.
