They look pretty because they're square but they're useless if you want to use the M16 as a true assault rifle. If you were using it in something like a carbine it'd be more justifiable because you need very few shots in CQB

That's true, for an intermediate cartridge it isn't that much. But they started off with those I think since the AR-10 was a proper battle rifle with a full-power cartridge and apparently getting 30 rounders was actually an engineering challenge iirc (deployment of them was limited at first)

20 rounds for a full-power battle rifle is the perfect capacity, that's why you see it imitated in every classic old world battle rifle. The AR-10, also being a full power battle rifle, did pretty well with it, especially since most soldiers (read: There were Portuguese and Sudanese contracts for the AR-10) were trained to fire it in semi-auto, and 7.62 is basically a smaller marksman's cartridge.
