why do u think our environment required such high intelligence and usage of tools? and yes there is plenty stopping us, evolution stops if a mutation is bad, it cant see into the future and searches for it 'greedily', you say we started to select for the intellect but evolution has no will behind it, there is no intellect behind it, there was no selective pressure to become sapient

Chance, we needed to develop tools and cooperate to survive in a highly competitive environment of african savannah, it came over millenias for us to become as you say sapient. Bad mutations are discarded yes but intellegence is a very powerful thing to have and a good mutation. Sapience is a biproduct of us growing more intelligent

Chance, we needed to develop tools and cooperate to survive in a highly competitive environment of african savannah, it came over millenias for us to become as you say sapient.
