I will admit you are right on the Christianity part as I am Catholic myself and the religion itself has contributed many advancements to the rest of the world, but what do you mean by "civilizing force"?

? By the time that Europe received the first wave of Christian masses, the Roman Empire had already existed for more than 500 years, Europe was most definitely not "caves and tents" around that time. Yes, you could argue that after the fall of said empire Europe went back technologically a couple of centuries but it still retained a lot of the technologies that the Romans introduced.

I think greek and roman cultures are the origin of european civilization albeit, and they weren't christian until near their fall.

Sir, You are forgetting about Northern-Europe and the Britis-Isles and Eastern-Europe a place at that time which was still barbaric and un-touched by the roman empire
