Pepe was absolutely a hate symbol for some time. Back in 2016 he was basically just a dogwhistle for being a /pol/ user if you posted him anywhere outside of 4chan. Now he’s transcore and chuds don’t use him anymore albeit

its literally nothing more than a meme. i see it used in discord emojis a lot, and ill see him pop up every now and then in places far from imageboards. if you look at the hate symbol chart you can see an absolutely disproportionate amount of frogs, and then if you look at the hateful keywords, all of it added together makes up the same amount of hateful symbols detected excluding pepes. meaning that virtually all frogs were falseflagged as extremists by the ADL deliberately, or a very small amount of those frogs were extremists, i hardly see anyone use pepe as a hate symbol anyway

Also Pepe was never an alt right symbol, the meme was popular all over 4chan not just /pol/ and most uses of the frog was just used to take up the file spot for threads and posts. Rather then a evil alt right imagery.
It was only called le alt right symbol because /pol/ and 4chan by extension was getting lots of news coverage in 2015 as the memes and influence of that board was spreading over the Internet, Pepe got lumped in with that coverage as a "new" symbol of the alt right despite the fact it was popular on most imagboards since the early 2010s.
