He got it while playing tennis. This was in the 80's/90's, so be aware, I'm sure recovery times are much better now, but he was bound to his apartment for weeks.

Recovery times haven't improved much, depends largely on if your meniscus got damaged or not. If it isn't , 3 weeks crutches; if there's damage sometimes even up to 3 months.

Good luck. If it's any condolence, my mom met my dad via chatrooms during the time, she brought him groceries. Also, maybe it's total bullshit, but any time I've injured a joint I've eaten chickens feet (dimsum style, where you're eating the collagen and ligaments) and have healed real nice, consider it.
