Ballistic type ICBMs are able to be intercepted since the 70s
Since the 90s they've been doing exa-atmosphereic intercepts so that they can get the missile before MIRV seperation which is such a pain in the ass it's almost not worth incercepting at all
Modern missiles are fractionally orbital, have a shallower trajectory and use more modern understandings of high hypersonic flow to stay in the upper atmosphere longer and maneuver using the atmosphere as to evade interceptor missiles
