There's always construction. Once the season heats up the companies are willing to hire just about anyone, at least for the short term. If you're not retarded or lazy you can make that short term into long term.

Many have tried and ended up like Chris McCandles. Very few people can do that, not even @nagolbud (I think he's a faker).
You're problem is the NYC job market is ass, reach out to agencies outside the state (if you set up an out of state job yourself you're more likely to not get than if you are going through an agency.)
Once you get a guaranteed job, you can rent and your adult life will be officially underway.
