Except they did, for over a decade and even with American weapons the tribesmen could do little but harass the invaders

multiple empires failed to take it over.

Actually, several empires have taken it over and the afghans couldn't drive them out. In both Russia's and America's occupations, the mujahedeen and Taliban couldn't recapture their lost territory, only when the invaders willingly left could they reassert power.
I don't know anything about the British occupation though.

Actually I made to vent at poorsians who get blown up for 20 years and when their bully gets bored and leaves they spin as some sort of Napoleonic victory, hence the "graveyard of empires" bullshit.
