Maybe some reactions having a super high score will balance it out and karma scores will retain meaning despite the extreme numbers.
If this is the case, I hypothesize that this was done intensionally by froot. Since froot joined so late, many users had hundreds more Reddit karma than him. By making reactions change the karma by the billions, that 100 point lead becomes insignificant.
