He was probably tracing it from memory without creating a rough outline/skeleton of the figure first (which is what you should do to get right proportions)

I remember being 14 and wondering why all of my drawings looked like shit. Turns out refrences and outlines help way more than just drawing it in one go from memory with a pen.
