firefox's defaults are dogshit though and in my experience it runs worse than chromium-based browsers on both phones and desktops

Probably not quite the answer you're looking for but Opera Mini (browser that uses server-side rendering) is still the standard on really basic feature phones these days
I don't have mine on hand at the moment but the Nokia 225 4G is a good example, hell I was even able to check my notifications on Kiwi Farms with it a few years ago

The captcha sucks on firefox mobile so I use Opera to post on the sharty, otherwise I use firefox
