Why is There a Limit to What Pages we Can Go To?

At the bottom of the 'what's new' page, there's a bar of pages that you can select to go to whatever you page you want. The problem is that you can only go to the 7th page. Why? Can you change this? I want to scan for threads to bump, not being able to reply to old threads, I feel like, is one of the reasons the shlog is dying, and I make sure to start up old threads again.
