We all remember the 2020 riots over the George Floyd incident in Minneapolis. I was in prison at the time, while most of you were in school. In the years since, George Floyd has essentially become an internet meme, as evidenced by the "breathtaking" reaction on here. He's a staple of online edgelord humor. But, putting all ebin edgefag irony aside, what do you actually think of the notorious 2020 incident where George Floyd was killed by Derek Chauvin, sparking riots across the country?
As someone who spent over nine years in prison (and was always a civil liberties absolutist regardless), you will not find me ever justifying police brutality. Was George Floyd a fine, upstanding member of society? No, of course not. Did that even remotely justify Derek Chauvin placing a knee on his neck for nine minutes, even after he had passed out? Again: no, of course not. If you support police brutality when it's directed at people who you consider scumbags, don't be surprised when that same police brutality then gets directed at people who are not scumbags. No lives matter to some cops. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile. I was glad to see the massive backlash against police when George Floyd was killed; it was the first time in a long time that police were actually being held accountable for their actions. Unfortunately, however, very little actually changed as a result. It is still very easy for cops to get away with just about anything, and that certainly doesn't look likely to change with the wannabe fascist dictator currently in the Oval Office.
