The next tropical system of note is forecast to affect the islands during the middle part of next week...At this point, the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic could be impacted. After that, a right turn near the Bahamas would send the storm into the open waters of the western Atlantic next weekend.Abundant ocean heat content means this storm should have no trouble intensifying into a hurricane, probably major - but the question is: when?A more intense storm would likely recurve earlier than a storm that took longer to intensify. A quicker recurve would reduce the chance of the system affecting the U.S. East Coast. In any case, those in the islands should watch this system closely in the days ahead, as should those in Bermuda, the eastern U.S., and Atlantic Canada for next weekend and the week of August 19th.

This animation illustrates one possibility, but the long-term track will change, as it's sensitive to pressure patterns over North America which could kick it out to sea or draw it closer in.The next hurricane name is Ernesto. Stay tuned!
