When I was a kid, my parents got me a Playstation 2, once of the games on there was the Sonic Gems Collection, which happened to be my favourite game on the system. One of the games in that collection was Sonic The Fighters, a game that I loved but every Sonic fan on the internet seemed to hate for no fucking reason just because "emm ackshually sonic doesn't belong in a fighting game" disregarding the fact that he's in fucking smash and hating on this gem of a game because Normalboots or Quickattack told them too or whatever the fuck.

Now, 30 years later, Sonic The Fighters a.k.a Sonic Championship is being played at tournaments and people are treating it like a competitive video game. Finally. After years of me playing it relentlessly and talking about how much I like this game to friends and family, the universe has seemed to understand that this underrated and unfairly overly hated game is actually pretty good. How long it will last in the limelight? I haven't a clue, but I'm glad it's finally getting some recognition for once.


My favourite character is Bark the "Polerbear" because he acts as a very heavy tank-like character with not a lot of agility or movement, but great moves that do a lot of damage.
There's also Fang the Sniper a.k.a Nack the Weasel, a projectile character who can pelt enemies at long ranges and is often hard to counter, having to get close to him to do real damage.
I find that people also like Honey, but I never found her moveset to be particularly interesting.

Overall I just love this game's artstyle, and I have no idea why people hate it, it's extremely intricate, the barriers are a resource you can leverage, theres tons of moves you can pull off and the game can become insanely fun against friends and family. I remember destroying my parents at this game when I was younger, because I kept spamming them with bombs as Bean and they didn't know how to use the barrier properly.

Anyways I just wanted to talk about this game because I love it so much and I also love the Sonic Gems Collection, everyone seems to hate it except for me, Sonic R is amazing, Sonic CD is amazing, Sonic the Fighters is great and I love the Game Gear games too, I grew up with this game so it's awesome to see it get some recognition for once.

This game basically used to be a Japan exclusive arcade game for M.A.M.E systems but I believe it first came to US and EU through the Gems collection and Xbox Live Arcade, aswell as PSN Store for PS3. The Gems Collection is genuinely the most epicest thing, everything about it is gemmy, the menu music, the gallery with the unlockables you can collect and the games itself. It gives off a really weird atmosphere to me. People still hate Sonic R just because it didn't have enough levels and "teh controls are hard" even though all you have to do is hold like 2 buttons. I'd call most of the games on the collection obscure to say the least and that's probably why they're so interesting, you don't really hear people talk about Sonic CD or Sonic R or Sonic The Fighters that much these days.
