There have still been some recent political victories on a congressional scale, at least. That Kentucky congressman that AIPAC wasted a few hundred thousand dollars on trying to kill his campaign with attack ads ended up winning three quarters of the vote in his district last night. Still, you have a point. I doubt a president could ever stand up to them. It would be far too much of a threat to their power if someone who isn't on their side receives that much authority.
