In my experience I have noticed three or four (depending on how you count #3) main strains of Satanism.
1. "Nietzschean Satanism" -- this is the original Satanism of Anton LaVey. It is basically a Luciferan interpretation of Nietzsche that is materialistic and doesn't actually believe in beings such as Satan. They are however still very interested in getting up to no good
2. "Gnostic Satanism" -- this branch actually does believe in Satan, and believes in the Gnostic notion that the serpent in the garden, and subsequently "satan", was actually the true God trying to reach humanity, and was silenced by the false and malevolent demiurge.
3. "Theistic Satanism" -- a combination of 1 and 2, it is expressed today in groups like the Order of the 9 Angles and the Noctulians. They praise Nietzsche, but also seem to have religious elements that may possibly be Gnostic-inspired where Yahweh the god of the Jews is the evil ruler of this world, and so the "left-hand path" (against the evil order of the demiurge) is embraced. If strain 1 is a misreading of Nietzsche than strain 3 is most aptly considered a misreading of Serrano. Theistic Satanists seem to be the most violent and sinister of Satanists.
4. "Humanist Satanism" -- the most common strain of Satanism today. It is allegedly a form of self-worship and claims descent from LaVey but is in practice "human worship" or and is basically secular humanism dressed up in edgy clothing.
Some Christians or Muslims or Jews call everything that is not their orthodoxy "Satanism", because they are seen as being guided in their falsehood by Satan. But there is clearly a difference between the worship of 'false idols' or flawed understandings of divinity, and the cognizant worship of the "antigod", or more accurately, the disdain for the "natural god", that makes Satanism historically unique.
Do you guys have any experience with satanists, or have done research into satanism and historical satanic cabals? I believe that the historical instances of "black masses" were probably committed by crazies, LARPers, and fools willing to sell their soul for mortal treasure and pleasure. Not people who were ideologically committed to Satanism. However, some Gnostic groups could honestly be called satanist from a certain lens.
