I notice old films, while not "high budget", still manage to compete with modern media on merit alone. Also considering everything you see is real, it just elevates the experience. For example I recently watched Water Loo (1970) and every person you see is a real human being marching in step. I did some research and this film wouldn't be possible without Soviet Army lending its troops.
In school in my German classes the teacher had us watch Das Boot, and even if the scale of the film is not as grand and stuck to a small sub. Everything is real such as them filming an actual u boat diving under water, not CGI but a real u boat diving under water. Think about how cool that is.

Nowadays more and more films try to detach from reality, either a sci-fi setting or a near future prediction. Which forces CGI by design. CGI has also come a long way, and got much cheaper to be almost free as long as you have a computer and a 3dfx team (their salaries are negligible in comparison what had to be done to achieve CGI in 2000s). Thanks for reading my blog, I just like real things.
