Unironically though I'd argue the very idea of transgenderism is a politically rooted ideology, in marxism more specifically. It follows their old precept of "liberating oppressed things", and in this case gender. Therefore it tried to redefine gender in a way that would liberate it from it's assumed shackles.
But it became something that people supported regardless of political identity yes, if you separate political identity from religious identity that is.

I wouldn't say that trans people chose to be trans, rather that they're groomed into it, in the way that the unwellness regarding your identity is directed towards your sexual identity, more so nowadays then through natural processes of the past centuries. Therefore I'd argue that dysphoria is an illness that constructs itself, rather than one that is just genetic.
