He had no Idea until the last year of school.

I think it's decently popular in Norway, no? I guess it's not on the cross country/biathlon levels but it's not really niche when it comes to winter sports.

it is pretty rare the more south you go
But usuaully in the midwest and northeast of the united states like hockey a bit

actually not really, yes maybe it's a bit more popular than in other countries in europe, but nowhere near canada or america. Skis are the king of winter sports here
