In the '90s and '00s, there was a trend in comedy where simply acting like a stereotypical flaming gay guy was seen as the pinnacle of hilarity in and of itself.

Probably the best example of this was Showtime's truly atrocious cartoon Queer Duck.

It was an extremely lazy and unfunny brand of comedy that echoed minstrel shows of the past. Thankfully, you don't see this sort of thing nearly as much anymore.
