I have a aquatic terrarium thats a few years old but recently it had a massive algae bloom. So i placed this terrarium in complete darkness for two weeks to kill all the micro algae and it still looks the same. Algae turns brown when it dies and algae can only survive a single week without sunlight. So it has to be green for other reasons. So like does anyone know why its still is still green and how i can fix it?View attachment IMG_6826.jpeg

check if somethings in the water that the algae feeds on or some shit
t. not a marine biologist

I assume they would only survive in sunlight since they are photosynthetic but idk there might be some weird obscure species that can eat something else in times of needs so checking for that wouldn’t hurt.

Put the terrarium next to a radiator for 72 hours, and put a wet towel between it and the radiator. The towel will negate the otherwise harmful effects of the radiator (the plants won't undergo water loss, due to the wet towel increasing the surrounding air's humidity), but the little heat that gets into the terrarium will kill the micro algae. It will leave your plants unharmed.

Nvm I misread the original post (the "aquatic" part). The wet towel isn't needed. Just put it next to a radiator for 72 hours and all the micro-algae should be gone. Your aquatic plants, on the other hand, should be 100% fine.

I have water fleas and ostracods in it. Would the heat kill them? Ik water fleas are known for daying off despite them being “hardy” so yea. Also could there possibly be a different reason why its green other than it being algae?

The heat from a radiator would certainly not kill them. Their heat tolerance is much higher than that of micro algae (obvious considering they're hardy multicellular animals, as opposed to literal algae), so they'd be perfectly fine.

Also the greenness is 100% due to algae, judging by the picture you sent.
