Yeah, you should probably do the "sketching and layer stuff", but make sure to pay attention to why you are doing it. Note where your improvements and flaws are, rather than just mindlessly drawing the same thing three or four times.
I won't be an artnigger who says "waaah, do Loomis! read these books! watch this person!" (even doe that's probably helpful too.), but I believe that thinking about your art is very important.
